Adjusted from – The Empowerment of Self-development – Phil Gregory – Original article for MO2vate Magazine.
What does inspirational really mean? To me, it’s about motivating, encouraging, and sparking change in others. When the Mo2vate team first asked me to write this piece for their inspirational men’s edition back in 2021, I hesitated. I didn’t see myself as “inspirational”. Yes, I’m direct and tenacious, probably the Jamaican in me, but I wasn’t convinced I had anything new to add.
Still, I realised that sharing honest experiences might help someone struggling to find their own path. So, this article is for those men in business who constantly doubt themselves or question their worth. You’re not alone, and sometimes, the smallest mindset shift can make the biggest difference.
Here are a few lessons that have shaped both my life and my business.

Listen
- Listen to your staff.
- Listen to your clients.
- Listen to your family.
Real listening isn’t just hearing, it’s understanding. Too often, we assume what people want instead of truly taking in what they’re saying. That’s how mistakes multiply, deadlines get missed, and tempers flare. When you really listen, you’ll discover that corrections are fewer, clients are happier, and relationships are strengthened.
People value being heard. It’s one of the most human things you can offer.
Plan
Planning is the backbone of success. Whether you’re building a company, a career, or a better version of yourself, having a plan keeps you grounded.
You might be naturally gifted, a great tradesperson, a skilled communicator, or a sharp strategist, but without a structured plan, chaos follows. Admin piles up, stress builds, and opportunities slip through your fingers.
Luck will play a part in your journey, but it won’t carry you forever. Write a plan, review it regularly, and stick to it. With direction, even the most ambitious goals become achievable.
Save
Saving gives you freedom and resilience. It’s what helps you survive when luck runs out.
Start by separating your personal and business finances. Open a proper business account and treat it professionally. Wages, bills, and essential expenses only; everything else stays put. Before long, that surplus can fund growth, from new marketing campaigns to better tools and equipment.
Work with an accountant who understands your goals. Their advice on investment, tax, and financial strategy will make a huge difference.
Saving isn’t glamorous; it’s discipline. But it’s the difference between struggling and sleeping soundly at night.
Self-Care
This one matters most. You can’t give to others if you’re running on empty.
Self-care isn’t selfish, it’s essential. You can’t lead a team, nurture a family, or grow a business if you’re burned out. Look after yourself first, and you’ll be far better equipped to support those around you.
A few truths I’ve learned:
-
Don’t take on too much. Long hours don’t equal productivity. Delegate where you can and trust your plan.
-
Look after your body. I stopped smoking years ago and adopted a vegetarian lifestyle. The result? Better focus, more energy, and improved health. You don’t have to go vegetarian, but eat well and keep active.
-
Limit alcohol. Enjoy life, but don’t let habits control you. Moderation keeps you sharper and more productive.
-
Get outdoors. A short walk clears your mind, lowers stress, and reconnects you with the world beyond your inbox.
Small habits like these build the foundation for long-term success.
Kindness
Business isn’t all about profit margins. True success lies in the impact you have on others.
Kindness might sound like a soft skill, but it’s a powerful one. When you lead with kindness, you earn trust, loyalty, and genuine respect, qualities that no balance sheet can measure.
Be generous with your time, patience, and compassion. Help a neighbour. Mentor a young entrepreneur. Support a local charity. These acts don’t just uplift others; they remind you why you started your journey in the first place.
Life’s too short to be remembered as the person who only chased money. Strive to be remembered for the good you did and the people you helped.
By listening, planning, saving, caring for yourself, and leading with kindness, you’ll discover that success isn’t about ego, it’s about growth. You might even find that others begin to see you as an inspiration, too.
Start Your Own Journey of Growth
If you’re ready to build a business that works smarter, not harder, focus on listening, planning, saving, and self-care. Empower your personal growth, and your business will naturally follow.
Take one small step today, your future self will thank you.
