SEO Evolves, It Doesn’t Die

SEO is not dead. Ever since I’ve been working on websites which is some 26+ years, there has been an assertion that SEO is a sinking ship. Well despite this constant doom-mongering SEO has continued to provide visibility and growth to businesses across the world in a staggering array of niches.

This assumption overlooks the evolutionary nature of SEO. Search optimisation has adapted to countless disruptions over the years—mobile-first indexing, voice search, algorithm updates like Panda and BERT, and now, even the rise of AI.

Generative AI is not the death knell of SEO but a challenge that will spur its next transformation. While the tools and strategies may change, the fundamental principle of connecting users to relevant, high-quality content remains.

There was a worry amongst marketing professionals like copywriters, graphic designers and SEOs that people with a basic understanding of the web would try to take on all their marketing and SEO and by using chat GPT. What we have seen is that tools like chat GPT have to be learned and mastered and implemented into a proper marketing strategy, otherwise the content these tools create will be worse, not better.

SEO is not dead because Websites Still Provide the Content for AI

Generative AI, such as ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini, relies heavily on crawling vast amounts of web content for training data. This underscores the vital role of websites in the digital ecosystem. Without fresh, optimised, and authoritative content from websites, these AI models would stagnate. Generative AI doesn’t instinctively know what’s good…it can only return what it finds in its training data.  Therefore, SEO is not dead. human oversight; ie customer choice is still a huge factor when it comes to buying decisions.

SEO ensures that website content is structured, relevant, and discoverable—qualities that AI-generated responses depend on to remain accurate and trustworthy.

AI and Search Engines Are Complementary, Not Replacement Technologies

While AI can provide quick answers, it cannot fully replace search engines, yet. Generative AI is excellent for short, conversational queries but lacks the depth, accountability, and source traceability often needed for detailed research, purchasing decisions, or nuanced problem-solving. Users still want and need to verify answers, delve into details, and engage with expert insights, all of which require websites and, by extension, SEO.  People enjoy opinion blogs, and they like to put a human face to blogs and brands.

The Clickless Search Era Isn’t the End for SEO

Clickless searches, where users get answers directly on a search engine results page, have existed for years but most users don’t really realise the significance of them.  Featured snippets are being often now replaced with AI snippets, and knowledge panels. Far from killing SEO, they represent an opportunity. Businesses can optimise content to own these prime placements, increasing visibility and authority. Even in a generative AI landscape, optimising how answers are presented, whether through voice or visual interfaces keeps SEO highly relevant.

Local and E-Commerce SEO Are Thriving

Generative AI cannot replicate the specific, hyper-localised strategies that local SEO requires. Consumers still search for nearby restaurants, services, and stores, and they need accurate, up-to-date information like opening hours, menus, directions, and reviews. Similarly, e-commerce SEO remains indispensable. AI may guide users to products, but transactional intent ultimately drives users to click through to websites to complete purchases.  there is a difference in searchers intent, some search for information and others search to buy or do deals.

SEO and Content Marketing Are Intertwined

AI doesn’t generate original, authoritative, or branded content—it curates and synthesises existing material. This reliance makes SEO-driven content marketing indispensable. You could do the same search and get a different AI answer. Whereas the more traditional method of content creation and marketing allows an authoritative article to be created and retain its value for as long as the website exists.

Brands that produce high-quality, well-optimised content tailored to their audience’s needs will continue to lead in their niches. Moreover, building trust, brand loyalty, and unique experiences are areas where AI falls short, keeping human-created SEO strategies crucial.

Data-Driven Insights Keep SEO Alive

SEO offers unparalleled insights into consumer behaviour, search trends, and market opportunities. Marketers use this data to craft strategies, refine messaging, and anticipate consumer needs. Generative AI doesn’t replace the need for this intelligence; it enhances it. Companies that leverage SEO analytics to inform their overall digital strategy will remain competitive.

It’s also important to remember that without content to measure, the market insight into customer behaviour disappears. How do you then respond to changes in sales or footfall if you cannot measure the impact of your content?

Generative AI Needs a Gatekeeper

As AI-generated content floods the web, the role of SEO in verifying authority, expertise, and trustworthiness becomes even more critical. Search engines and users will rely on signals like backlinks, domain authority, and structured data.  Even if AI replaced search engines…HOW is it verifying and grading which information to present?  The majority of businesses welcome the opportunity to rank and to compete and I guarantee no small business would welcome that opportunity being removed and replaced by the choice of a machine.

Adaptation of marketers Is the Key to Survival

The history of technology shows that industries rarely die—they adapt. Just as newspapers transitioned to digital platforms and traditional retailers embraced e-commerce, SEO will integrate AI into its toolkit. Instead of clinging to outdated tactics, SEOs will focus on optimising content for new platforms, interfaces, and user behaviours.

Conclusion: SEO Is Not Dead, It’s Evolving

SEO’s obituary has been written before—when social media rose when voice search gained traction, and when algorithm updates disrupted rankings. Yet, SEO has thrived by adapting to each new challenge. Generative AI is another such challenge, not the end of the road. Far from being a sinking ship, SEO is a ship steering toward uncharted but navigable waters. Those who adapt will not only survive but thrive in the era of AI.

SEO is not dead The future of SEO is not about clinging to relevance; it’s about embracing change, innovating, and continuing to connect businesses with the users who need them. The game is far from over—it’s just entering a new phase.
