Case Study – National Telephone Answering Provider Scales Organic Growth

Table of Contents

When a well-established national telephone answering company approached us, the issue they had was not service quality.

It was discoverability.

They operated nationally. They served businesses across multiple sectors. They had particular strength supporting legal firms such as solicitors and barristers, as well as healthcare clinics including osteopaths, chiropractors, physiotherapists, dentists and podiatrists.

Yet despite this expertise, they were not ranking for their core services.

A National Provider With Low Search Visibility

At the outset, the company’s website failed to rank for primary commercial terms such as telephone answering service, legal answering service or medical answering service.

The previous website had been visually strong but transactionally weak. It was design-heavy, with a limited service-led structure. Most content focused on internal operations and charity work. While positive for brand image, it did not align with search demand or transactional intent.

Local Visibility Was Also Low.

The company weren’t doing well with their Google Business Profile –  formerly “Google My Business.  As a result of that, their Local pack visibility was also poor.

The Local Pack is the boxed section that appears near the top of Google’s search results when someone searches for a local service.

Example of “Local Pack” on Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERP)

You will usually see it when the search has clear local intent, such as:

  • “SEO company near me” or “Cheese supplier in Chesterfield”, “Physiotherapist Matlock”

It typically shows:

  • A small map

  • 2/3 business listings

  • Star ratings and review counts

  • Address details

  • Opening hours

  • A call button on mobile screens

Because it displays above the standard organic listings, it is one of the most valuable positions in local SEO.

The Google Business Profile lacked optimisation and strategic, regular maintenance.

Reviews

Gathering reviews can be important.  Many businesses have long thrived on Word of mouth, and that’s fine for companies that have a stream of “in-the-know local customers“, If your local competitors have a significantly better online presence than you, and in particular, a significantly more visible set of customer endorsements, guess which company new customers will be tempted to contact first?

This client’s reviews were limited.
Below, you can see an example of how reviews affect the way that the local pack looks. Companies with more reviews, whilst not necessarily “better”, are showing experience and customer satisfaction, and that’s more tempting to potential new customers.

Business Directory Listings

The client did have some directory listings, but they were scant and had been done manually, one by one.
This means that each one had to be claimed by taking several steps:

  • Visiting the directory site
  • Logging in *if anyone knew where the login info was
  • Manually editing each listing.  *Can take ages

This issue lies in the process; doing this manually, multiple times, is both time-consuming and mind-numbingly boring.  This tends to be why companies don’t do it…or they start it and don’t finish it, or they simply don’t maintain it due to the sheer amount of time it takes.   The result is invariably an incomplete effort at being found across the directory-sphere, and that means you’re missing out on important endorsement opportunities for your business.

Paid Advertising Was Lacking

Paid advertising was not a viable long-term solution in this niche. Cost per click in the answering service sector is extremely high, making aggressive ad scaling commercially inefficient.  Whilst it can be said that there are always some opportunities that can arise, getting a decent ROI / Return on investment from Google Ads or even Social Media ads. Can be tricky if the CPC  / Cost per click is generally too high.

Lack of Authoritative Articles With Relevance and Frequency,

The website had challenges all around.   Another issue was that there simply weren’t enough blogs, but those that did exist didn’t target meaningful service-based queries. In fact, they were much more personalised, focusing on actions inside the company rather than demonstrating expertise and authority.

How we fixed the holes and put them on the right path

Full Technical Rebuild and Migration

The first major step was migrating the website to a new host and development environment.  This was not just cosmetic.

The rebuild improved:

  • Site speed
  • Crawlability
  • URL logic and hierarchy
  • Mobile usability
  • Content publishing flexibility
  • Technical SEO scoring
  • Structured data implementation
  • Landing pages were introduced for key service categories. These pages not only better explained what services were available, but also targeted specific niches.
  • Internal linking was significantly strengthened. Previously, weak contextual linking was replaced with a deliberate authority flow between core pages and related supporting content.
  • Schema markup was implemented to improve search engine understanding. Images were labelled, renamed and optimised.

The site moved from a visually led brochure to a logically structured acquisition platform; this technical foundation unlocked scalability.

Bottom of Funnel First: Commercial Intent Strategy

With the rebuild complete, we prioritised bottom-of-funnel optimisation.

Instead of starting with broad awareness content, the focus was placed on commercial, transactional queries such as:

• Legal answering service
• Solicitor answering service
• Medical answering service
• Chiropractic answering service
• Podiatry answering service
• National telephone answering service

Dedicated landing pages were created for these sectors, supported by growing “spoke pages” targeting semantic variations based on localisation, attainability, search volume and real customer queries.

Only once commercial intent rankings began to strengthen did we expand further up the funnel.

Several strategic blog articles were published each month, building authority gradually while maintaining focus on conversion-driven content.

This sequencing matters because traffic without intent does not produce sustainable business growth.

Expanding Nationally From a Local Epicentre

  • Although the company operates nationally, we deliberately grew outward from a defined regional base.
  • Improving local pack presence was critical.
  • The Google Business Profile was cleaned, structured and actively maintained. Reviews were actively gathered. Business categories and descriptions were aligned with service intent. Regular updates reinforced activity signals.
  • This strengthened local trust signals, while national authority began to grow organically.
  • Rather than attempting immediate nationwide dominance, we built credibility step by step.

Measurable Growth Across Every Channel

Since the end of July 2023 compared with the previous period, the results have been substantial:

  • Active users increased by 503%
  • New users increased by 537 %
  • Organic search traffic increased by 337 %
  • Direct traffic increased by 513 %
  • Referral traffic increased by 1,837 %
  • Domain authority grew from 12 to 30.

That authority shift alone reflects a stronger backlink profile, improved content relevance and enhanced technical structure.

The growth in direct traffic is especially significant. It suggests improved brand recognition alongside organic discovery.

This was not an isolated platform performance.  It was a systemic improvement.

Commercial Impact and Team Expansion

  • Growth translated into operational change.
  • The company has expanded its team to accommodate increased demand.
  • While paid search remains commercially restrictive due to high sector CPCs, organic performance now provides a stable acquisition channel that compounds over time.
  • Instead of relying heavily on expensive paid visibility, the business has developed a sustainable national reach.

From a well-designed brochure to a hardworking Authority Platform

Previously, the website was a design-led showcase with limited commercial targeting.  Today, it is an acquisition-focused authority platform.

Technical strength, internal linking architecture, structured data, sector-specific landing pages and strategic content publication all work together to drive national visibility.

The company now competes for meaningful answering service terms across multiple industries.

And the work continues.

SEO at this scale is not a campaign. It is an evolving strategy.
