Over the past 28 years, I’ve been exploring the labyrinthine world of SEO, As an SEO veteran, one of the key insights I’d like to share with you today concerns a largely overlooked hidden but potent tool: XML sitemaps. In the online universe, the importance of a business website’s XML sitemap cannot be overstated.
For the uninitiated, an XML sitemap is a comprehensive directory of all the pages on your website. Think of it as a roadmap for search engines, guiding them to the essential pages on your site, and giving them a clue about the overall structure.
Now, you may wonder, “Isn’t that what an HTML sitemap does?”
The difference between HTML sitemaps and XML sitemaps
While both XML and HTML sitemaps serve as guides, their audience differs. HTML sitemaps are designed for your human visitors, aiding them in navigating your website. On the other hand, XML sitemaps cater to the discerning eyes of search engine bots, giving them an overview of your site’s structure and signalling what content to index.
There are some crucial components that should be included in an XML sitemap:
- Every significant URL of your website, including those that might be hard for search engine bots to discover.
- Metadata for each URL, such as when it was last updated, how often it changes, and its importance relative to other pages on your site.
For a robust and efficient way to create XML sitemaps, I recommend ‘Screaming Frog SEO Spider’. This tool is user-friendly, powerful, and most importantly, a favourite among SEO professionals. It can help you generate XML sitemaps efficiently, thereby saving valuable time and ensuring accuracy. Another good tool is part of the YOAST plugin for WordPress sites.
Here are a few handy tips to make the most of your XML sitemap:
- Update Regularly: Keep your XML sitemap up-to-date. Whenever you add or remove pages, ensure your sitemap reflects these changes. *Many sites create the XML sitemap automatically but if you use a CMS such as wordpress you may be able to tweak and configure the types of content that is added to the sitemap.
- Prioritise: Not all pages are created equal. Assign priority levels in your sitemap to help search engines understand which pages are more important. *You can’t really do this with many auto-generated sitemaps.
- Keep It Clean: Exclude irrelevant pages such as those with duplicate content or ‘thank you’ pages from your sitemap. They add no value to search engines. I never allow tags or content formats into my sitemaps.
- Size Matters: If your site has a vast number of pages, consider using multiple XML sitemaps. Remember, a single XML sitemap can have up to 50,000 URLs. Having a cull of unwanted or unnecessary URLs can really improve your site’s performance in the SERPS.
- Submit Your Sitemap: Once you’ve created your XML sitemap, submit it directly to search engines via Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools.
In conclusion, the XML sitemap is the unsung hero in your SEO strategy. It’s your silent envoy to search engines, efficiently leading them through your digital terrain. With a clear and comprehensive XML sitemap, you’re equipping search engines with the right tools to understand and rank your site effectively.
Remember, XML sitemaps may not seem glamorous or exciting, but their importance is hard to overstate. They offer the dual benefits of improved SEO performance and better site visibility, thereby ensuring that your digital marketing does not go unnoticed in the crowded online marketplace.
Get your hands on a reliable tool, like Screaming Frog SEO Spider, roll up your sleeves, and start weaving your XML sitemap today. It’s time to shine a light on your business and lead search engines directly to your virtual doorstep. * Sitemaps are going to be crucial if you are planning a website migration too.
