One of our SEO / PPC Case Studies.
In the summer of 2019, we were approached by a small Wargames Miniatures company to help them raise the visibility of their website.
We took a good look at the WordPress website and then held several consultations with the owner. We wanted to help them reach their goals despite their limited budget.
The business was a start-up run by an independent, experienced miniatures sculptor who used to work for Games Workshop and many other major toy manufacturers.
His skill was to create small, 28mm metal figures that can be used as avatars in fantasy or sci-fi tabletop wargames. He had created his brand and a range of around 100 Wargames Miniatures. The issue was that his website was very slow and he was barely selling any figures. On average, he was making less than £100 per month from sales. Furthermore, our client was dealing with an uncooperative web developer.
Wargames Miniatures Website Audit
Peak District SEO then carried out an audit of the website. Looking at site health first. The site was very slow, this was partly down to the hosting, but mostly down to uncompressed images and files.
Uncompressed JavaScript and CSS files numbered in their hundreds, and the images being used on the site were coming straight from a high-resolution digital camera. We proposed to compress all the images and, where appropriate, create more modern versions of the files.
When we spoke on the phone and via email, the developer was again uncooperative, refusing to give us access to the website and hosting panel, which we needed to solve the issues. Sometimes this happens; this is a big red flag to us.
The Importance of Removing Blockers
Peak District SEO always begin all jobs with a policy of collaboration. We love to form links with other tech providers to ensure happy clients and create a better web.
We work well with many professional designers and developers across the country. However, if we encounter uncooperative developers and web hosts, we almost always advise the client to break ties with them.
In his instance, the previous web designer/developer was also the WebHost. This particular chap was extremely unhelpful when it came to working with us. He was preventing us from gaining access to parts of the website and the website files.
Usually, when this happens, it’s because the site is hosted on low-quality, shared hosting with no individual control panels. Often, the site shares plugins or software licenses with multiple other sites. That was happening here, to the detriment of our client’s business.
Ultimately, any company your business hires to create growth needs to take instruction from you. If you have proper evidence that their strategy is detrimental, discuss it with them. If they refuse to listen, find someone who will.
Our client fired the web developer /host, and Peak District SEO took over the site. Moving it to new servers with the help of one of our trusted partners.
Website Optimisation For Better Speed & Growth
Once we had migrated the site onto a better server, one that both us and the client could access, we began the necessary work, which included:
- Analytics tracking
- Advanced Ecommerce tracking
- Robots file tweaks
- Creation of sitemaps
- Connecting Analytics with Search Console Data
- Google Tag Manager for more dynamic tracking
- Compression of JS and CSS files for speed improvement
- Removal/ reattribution of premium plugins
- Image compression, renaming and labelling
- Sitewide meta data rewrite
- ecommerce labels and filters applied
Growing A Wargames Miniatures Website
Growing a business making lead or resin figures can be tricky. there are some large established companies out there. But, if you have a good product and the will to optimise your website to make it easy for your customers to buy…there is no reason why your websites shouldn’t make you several thousand pounds or dollars each month.
The future growth plan is now in place. Our client has a template for product merchandising. They have a manufacturing plan that allows them to create products cheaply and generate good profits.
In November 2019 the company made just 6 sales, a year later the average was 40. Small numbers, but all done on a shoestring budget.
