Which eCommerce platform is best for my business?
This is a question that we get asked a lot. Honestly, the answer is…” it’s subjective”. Simply because different businesses have different requirements. There are obviously several different platforms out there, and getting the right one installed, set up and managed is going to have a big impact on how your business operates. The main platforms that we see are WooCommerce, Magento, Shopify and EKM. There are other e-commerce platforms out there, but these are the ones most of the clients we’ve worked with use.
This blog will look specifically at two of the most popular platforms our clients use, WooCommerce vs. Magento. Let me say that for the record, Peak District SEO like both platforms, but it’s very much “horses for courses”.
Woo Commerce
WooCommerce is a popular ecommerce platform that has gained a lot of attention in recent years. It is an open-source plugin for the WordPress platform that allows users to easily create an online store.
There are several reasons why WooCommerce may be a better option than Magento for your online business.
Which is the best value for money?
WooCommerce is a free, open-source platform, whereas Magento has a paid version and can be expensive to set up and maintain. With WooCommerce, you only need to pay for hosting and any additional (paid) plugins or extensions you may need. This makes it a more cost-effective option for small and medium-sized businesses.
It should be said that there is still a free version of Magento that can be installed but it is no longer supported by Magento/Adobe. So unless you are a Magento expert, you’re on your own with that.
WooCommerce isn’t without costs, of course. As mentioned above, you’ll need to pay for your hosting and the faster, the better. You’ll also need to pay a designer /developer to build your site and make sure it all works properly. In addition to this, you’re going to need to have some form of a maintenance contract with them to make sure they can respond quickly if your store goes down or develops any issues.
Since 2018, Magento has been rebranded as Adobe Commerce. Magento is still the name that most users know the back-end editor by, and there are 3 options available. It is going to be considerably more pricey to set up a Magento store than a WooCommerce store, but that won’t be an issue if you consider yourself an enterprise brand. Woo is Easy to use:
WooCommerce is known for its ease of use, making it a great option for small businesses. It has a simple user interface and requires minimal technical knowledge to set up and manage. Magento, on the other hand, can be quite complex and may require more technical expertise. *Anyone who is ‘tech-savvy’ or familiar with website CMSs would be able to find their way around the Magento interface, but it does still have some very technical aspects where you are going to need professional knowledge or a high amateur level of understanding.
Customisable page layouts
WooCommerce is highly customisable, allowing users to easily add and edit products, create custom pages and templates, and even integrate with other platforms like payment gateways and shipping providers. We recommend getting your designer to walk you through the process, like anything in web development, too much fiddling can break things, so try to create and stick to a development schedule.
Magento also offers customisation options, but it can be more difficult and time-consuming to make changes. The chances are you’re going to need a relationship with a developer to prevent your store from looking ‘ham-fisted’.
Security:
All web platforms claim to have the best security. The reality is that all web platforms are vulnerable to attack. WooCommerce is built on top of the WordPress platform, which is known for its strong security features. However, it has to be said that WordPress’s open-source plugins are vulnerable to attack, so it’s important to have a good web host with strong security features and backups. As well as keeping the theme and plugins up to date. WooCommerce employs a dedicated team of developers who work to keep the platform up to date with the latest security patches and updates.
Magento is similar, whilst an enterprise version of the platform can expect better levels of security than a small business, both its themes and extensions (Magento version of plugins) have to be monitored for security issues.
Community and Support
WooCommerce has a large and active community of users and developers, making it easy to find solutions and answers to any questions you may have. Magento also has a strong community but you may find that in many cases it is more tech-savvy, find if you are a buddy developer, but not so good if you’re a busy product manager.
In conclusion, we think WooCommerce is a great option for small and medium-sized businesses looking for a cost-effective, easy-to-use, and customisable ecommerce platform. Its integration with the open-source WordPress platform means it’s not going away anytime soon.
